The young man is okay, but this was a scary experience. He was not a part of my skills class. I was demonstrating for my class what to do and explaining to them what not to do. And then he backed up and did exactly what I said not to do. He is grabbing his bladder area, and I was super scared that he was going to have some internal damage, but thank God he didn’t. Similar crashes occur frequently on the feature that one of my students is pictured riding successfully above called the “The Lightning Filter Feature.”
The roll-down lunge is one of the most useful tools on the trail, and it is also one that can have disastrous consequences if not done correctly. Can you guess what the two common mistakes are? This maneuver is taught in Ground Control 1. Sometimes short demo videos are helpful, but there is no substitute for getting feedback from someone who is trained to know what you are doing correctly and what you can improve on.
